EDUCATION & OUTREACH
SOUTH BAY CARES ENVIRONMENTAL COMMITTEE
Lack of clean and reliable water resources has always been known as an international issue, but it is also a growing domestic issue. The average American uses 100 gallons of water a day which is more than any other country on Earth. To create awareness, South Bay Cares promoted the Gallon Challenge throughout the area. During one week this past June, participants in the South Bay area experienced what it is like to live on 1 gallon of water for one day to meet all of their needs. This challenge produced an educational and informational flyer with simple actions to reduce water consumption and enlightened its participants in the process. CHILDREN’S ORCHARD
“Lead by Example” is Children Orchard’s initiative – teaching children and parents how to reuse, repurpose and recycle items in their everyday life to help the environment. Children’s “SWAPS” are increasing in popularity and are an excellent way to create awareness of the importance of reuse. Children’s Orchard makes it their mission to encourage such exchanges and offers only the highest quality items to ensure optimum reuse. For more info, visit www.childrensorchard.com
ENVIRONMENTAL LEADERSHIP
OUR LADY OF GUADALUPE SCHOOL
Our Lady of Guadalupe School has squeezed in about as much sustainability as possible into their little campus. This includes solar panels on the roof, composting and gardening on-site, outreach both on campus and in the surrounding community, and participating in the Trash-Free Lunch program. They do beach clean ups and clothing drives and even their robotics program developed a device to help detect toilet leakage.
BRIDGE BUILDER
CATALINA VIEW GARDENS
Located on the Palos Verdes Peninsula, Catalina View Gardens is a 94 acre agricultural oasis amidst the sprawl of Los Angeles County. The site consists of an operational vineyard, avocado orchard, lemon orchard and organic vegetable garden. They also supply produce to their neighbor, and fellow SEED Award nominee, Terranea Resort whose Resorts Executive Chef refers to the partnership as “Farm to Terranea” – a play on the term “farm to table”. This farm to table model can be replicated by anyone at their home as well, spreading sustainability throughout the community. For more information, visit www.catalinaviewgardens.com
