A Sight 30 years in the making, Now Open

The Descanso Gardens, located in La Canada Flintridge, is opening a section of their garden that has been off limits for 30 years.

A 5.5 acre section of the garden has undergone an 18-month long renovation. Several Eucalyptus trees were removed from the area. This was done to allow the native oaks to have more room to grow and thrive. The goal of the project is to have an area of the garden look as it once did in the 16th Century.  Executive Director David Brown provided a quote highlighting the unique approach to the renovations.

“When you talk about expanding a botanical garden, you don’t necessarily think about bringing the natural landscape back,” Brown said, invoking the idea of gardens as showcases for exotic and rare species. “But now, it’s the native habitat that is exotic, because it’s been mucked up, it’s been changed, altered by human interests.”

The garden is located at 1418 Descanso Drive, La Cañada Flintridge 91011. For more information, please visit http://www.descansogardens.org/
